HYDRAULIC CYLINDERS FOR METALLURGY AND STEEL
Sector
Silvio Fossa S.p.A. designs and manufactures custom hydraulic cylinders for metallurgy and the steel industry. Applications include steel plants, continuous casting, rolling mills and tube plants, with HAGC and AWC capsules for control systems.
In steel and metallurgical plants cylinders work in continuous service, amid heat, water and scale, and both product quality and plant availability depend on them.
TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
- Hot and cold rolling mills: HAGC capsules for thickness control and AWC for width
- Roll balancing and roll change
- Continuous casting and handling of ladles and semi-finished products
- Shears, coilers, uncoilers and finishing lines
SECTOR REQUIREMENTS
- Continuous service: reliable, long-lasting seals to reduce plant downtime
- Harsh environment: high temperatures, cooling water, dust and scale
- Precision: seal friction calculated and verified for control systems
- Maintenance: revamping and spare parts to shorten intervention times
RECOMMENDED PRODUCTS
- HAGC & AWC: hydraulic capsules for the rolling load
- Double acting cylinders: for balancing, roll change and handling
- Rotary joints and rotary cylinders: to supply fluids to rotating parts
- Single acting and plunger cylinders: for lifting and one-way thrust
- Revamping: to rebuild cylinders from any manufacturer
The examples cover steelworks, continuous casting, rolling mills and tube plants, from electrode lifting to capsules and expander cylinders. Each photograph is accompanied by the data for that particular application.

From rolling mill operation to cylinder maintenance
In a rolling mill, HAGC and AWC capsules have a different role from cylinders used for handling, balancing or shifting. Selection starts with the function on the line and the operating conditions: duty cycle, temperature, fluid and integration with the control system.
For an existing cylinder, describe the application, the observed problem and the available component data. Drawings and documentation help assess replacement or revamping. Spare parts and on-site assistance also support maintenance.
Frequently asked questions
Does Silvio Fossa S.p.A. make cylinders for metallurgy?+
Yes. Applications include electrode lifting cylinders, continuous casting cylinders, rolling mill capsules, balancing and bending blocks, traversing cylinders and expanders for tube plants.
What are HAGC and AWC capsules?+
They are large-diameter, short-stroke cylinders mounted in rolling stands: HAGC controls the strip thickness, AWC the width.
What is the maximum size?+
Components up to 3.000 mm diameter and 15.000 mm length can be machined, and cylinders and components weighing up to 100 tons can be assembled.
How are the cylinders tested before delivery?+
Static and dynamic tests are performed up to 1.500 bar, simulating the final application. Materials undergo certified controls, including level 2 non-destructive tests carried out in-house.
Can an existing cylinder be replaced or revamped?+
Yes. Silvio Fossa S.p.A. offers a complete revamping service for all kinds of cylinders, both its own and those of other manufacturers.
What information is needed for a rolling mill cylinder?+
Specify the function of the cylinder or capsule, its position on the line, dimensions and known operating conditions. For maintenance or replacement, include drawings, component references and a description of the problem.
