HYDRAULIC CYLINDERS FOR NAVAL AND OFFSHORE

Sector

Naval and offshore are sectors served by Silvio Fossa S.p.A. with cylinders engineered case by case, with certified tests and traceability of the materials used.

On ships and platforms, cylinders must withstand the marine environment and work safely even where access for maintenance is difficult.

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

  • Cranes, winches and lifting systems
  • Ramps, doors and hatch covers
  • Heave compensation systems and tensioners
  • Equipment handling on ships and offshore platforms

SECTOR REQUIREMENTS

  • Marine environment: corrosion protection with suitable paint cycles and rod treatments
  • Safety: design with FEM and fatigue analysis and tests that simulate the application
  • Documentation: certified tests and material traceability
  • Logistics: seaworthy packaging and support for transport and customs

Defining a cylinder for the marine environment

For a crane, ramp or tensioning system, describe the cylinder function and required movement. Include stroke, installation space, loads, fluid and exposure conditions. Selecting materials and treatments requires an understanding of the operating environment; any standards and documentation requirements should be stated in the project specification.

Frequently asked questions

Does Silvio Fossa S.p.A. make cylinders for the naval and offshore sectors?+

Yes. It is one of the sectors served by Silvio Fossa S.p.A., together with metals, steel, test machines, petrochemical, naval, offshore, energy, cement and drilling industry.

How are cylinders protected from the marine environment?+

Paint cycles and rod treatments are chosen according to the environment: for example nickel plating or stainless steel instead of chrome plating alone.

What is the maximum size?+

Components up to 3.000 mm diameter and 15.000 mm length can be machined, and cylinders and components weighing up to 100 tons can be assembled.

How are the cylinders tested before delivery?+

Static and dynamic tests are performed up to 1.500 bar, simulating the final application. Materials undergo certified controls, including level 2 non-destructive tests carried out in-house.

Can an existing cylinder be replaced or revamped?+

Yes. Silvio Fossa S.p.A. offers a complete revamping service for all kinds of cylinders, both its own and those of other manufacturers.

What information is needed for a naval or offshore cylinder?+

State the equipment, function, loads, stroke, available space, fluid and environmental conditions. Include available drawings and specify the standards and documents required for the project.
